Busch PROtective is a German company that manufactures the world’s premier ballistic protection systems for Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Public Safety Professionals. They combine cutting-edge technology, rapid prototyping, and industry-leading performance, to create mission-configured ballistic helmet systems for operators globally that focus on stopping rounds with limited back-faced energy transfer.
Their booth stood out with one of their helmets, the AMP-1TP, with a mandible and visor that looked completely shot up. It had 33 impacts of 9mm without a single penetration and a max Back Face Deformation of only 3mm. I first spoke with Jedrzej, the director of marketing. First I noticed that in comparison with the other booths they were not suited up and had yellow Nike's, you can read about their yellow shoes below the videos.
Jedrzej happily explained the background of Busch PROtective and what they are trying to achieve, protecting what matters as they say. On the tablet, he proudly showed me a couple of videos of a ballistic test with their AMP-1TP helmet and a ballistic test of a couple of their competitor helmets, non that I could easily identify. In the video you could clearly see that the AMP-1TP helmet stopped all bullets with minimal back face deformation while the other helmets were performing far less, meaning severe head trauma or worse.
Their AMP-1TP helmet is currently the only composite helmet in the world that meets the new DEA-FBI Ballistic Helmet Protocol V1.0-2019 as well as the European VPAM-3 standard and the NIJ IIIA testing protocol. The helmet has increased edge and multi-impact capabilities that enhance the helmet’s protective area by up to 50% compared to standard ballistic helmets, offering high fragmentation protection. The new Protocol, released in 2019, focuses on real-world ballistic performance, including improved penetration testing, hot & cold severe conditioning, less than 1-inch edge protection, and significantly limiting energy transfer during a ballistic event. The helmet is currently used by the United States Department of Justice (FBI, DEA, USMS & ATF).
In the following video Scott Wyatt, President of Busch PROtective USA goes more in-depth about the helmet protocol and the AMP-1TP helmet.
Edwin Busch, the CEO of Busch Protective, yes it's in the name, gave me an overview of their lineup, you can watch this video below.
The Sneakers: The story behind sneakers turned out to be pretty awesome. One of Busch Protective’s customers called them “the helmet rebels”. And so, they decided to wear colorful sneakers to emphasize their pride in not following the mainstream. Jedrzej said: “We break rules and think out-of-the-box because this is our way to constantly improve and become better and better. In this sense we are rebels”. We do not need to wear suits to prove the quality of our products. Our products are great. We can wear whatever we want. And why the yellow color? This is the color of aramid – the material used in ballistic helmets of Busch PROtective.
Back Face deformation (BFD): When a projectile impacts the helmet. The back of the helmet sits, separated by padding against the head. As the helmet stops the projectile, which takes time and distance, the helmet is deformed backward toward the head. How much it is deformed depends on the protective level of the helmet and the energy of the projectile. The distance of deformation is referred to as ‘’back face deformation.’’ In the near future, I will go more in-depth about this topic.
